What It Is
Cybernetics is the study of control and communication in systems—how systems pursue goals through feedback loops, sensor data, and adaptive behavior under constraints. Originally formalized by Norbert Wiener in the 1940s, cybernetics provides a unified framework for understanding goal-seeking behavior whether in biological organisms, mechanical systems, or human organizations.
A cybernetic system contains five essential components: a goal state it attempts to reach, sensors that provide environmental feedback, actuators that enable action, a control loop that uses sensor data to adjust actuator behavior, and resource constraints that limit operational duration. The Feedback Loop Structure

Cycle time (duration from action to adjustment) determines system responsiveness. Short cycle times enable rapid adaptation. Long cycle times mean the system drifts far from optimal before correction arrives.

Gradient Ascent vs Destination Navigation

The Pivot Trap
Dramatic pivots often represent gradient-descent failures. Instead of climbing local gradient incrementally (sense direction, adjust, measure, repeat), founders teleport to random location hoping it's higher. This occasionally succeeds but is expensive—abandons all local gradient information and restarts search from zero.
Better strategy: backward chain from small improvements. "What makes current retention 5% higher?" generates local adjustments. Iterating these adjustments performs gradient ascent. "What completely different product should we build?" abandons gradient and performs random search.
Resource Optimization Under Constraint
Optimal foraging theory studies how resource-constrained organisms allocate search effort. The central trade-off: exploration (search for new resources) vs exploitation (extract from known resources) under finite energy budget.

Both fail through identical mechanisms: broken feedback loops, miscalibrated sensors, slow cycle times, resource depletion before goal achievement. Both succeed through identical patterns: tight loops, multi-sensor integration, rapid updates, efficient search.
The Thermodynamic Constraint
Statistical mechanics reveals that systems naturally flow to low-energy configurations. This applies to cybernetic systems through energy landscapes. Actions with low activation cost execute more frequently than actions with high activation cost, independent of conscious intention.
The cybernetic system must either:
- Engineer energy landscape so desired actions have low cost (prevention architecture)
- Supply continuous energy to maintain far-from-equilibrium states (expensive, unsustainable)
Startups naturally drift toward low-cost activities: internal meetings, feature polish, theoretical planning.
